When a WebP file still needs optimization

WebP is designed for efficient web delivery, but the format alone does not guarantee a small file. A WebP image can still have excessive dimensions, a very high quality setting or complex content. It may also have been converted from another source without matching the intended display size.

Compress mode preserves WebP output. The encoder works toward your approximate target and can resize when a maximum dimension is selected. Results vary with image complexity and browser resources, so compare the output with the source instead of relying only on the extension.

How to reduce a WebP image

  1. Add one or more WebP files.
  2. Choose an approximate maximum size and a sensible maximum dimension.
  3. Use the default quality as a starting point, especially for photographic content.
  4. Process the files and inspect each card independently.
  5. Download only results that improve the intended use case.

Lossy output and transparency

Browser WebP encoding through Canvas or compression libraries may use lossy settings. This means lower quality can reduce file size by discarding some visual detail. WebP can also support transparency, but complex semi-transparent areas contribute to file size. Inspect logos, fine text, hair, product edges and gradients at their actual display size.

Older or restricted browsers may not export WebP even when they can display it. The tool checks export support and keeps JPEG and PNG choices available when WebP conversion is unavailable.

Will compression always make WebP smaller?

No. An already optimized image can remain similar in size or become larger after re-encoding. The result card reports the change directly.

Can I preserve the original dimensions?

Yes. Enable “Keep original dimensions,” understanding that the encoder then depends more heavily on quality changes.

Is WebP always better than JPEG?

No single format wins every case. Compatibility, workflow, image content and the actual encoded result all matter.
