What happens during PNG to WebP conversion?
The browser decodes the PNG, draws it to a Canvas and exports a new WebP file. The PNG source is not modified. WebP can preserve transparent areas in modern browsers, but its quality control and encoder behavior differ from lossless PNG. A converted image may be smaller, similar or larger depending on content and settings.
Convert a PNG step by step
- Select one or more PNG images.
- Confirm that Convert mode and WebP output are selected by the page preset.
- Choose output quality. Higher values usually retain more detail but can create larger files.
- Start conversion and review each result independently.
- Check transparency, fine edges and size before using the WebP copy.
Transparency, quality and compatibility
WebP supports transparency, making it suitable for many logos, product cutouts and interface graphics. However, lossy encoding can affect semi-transparent edges and subtle gradients. Review the file on the background where it will actually appear.
Most modern browsers can display and export WebP, but the tool tests export support before enabling the option. If export is unavailable, JPEG and PNG remain selectable. Keep a PNG original when you need lossless editing, broad compatibility with a particular older workflow or an archival master.

Does WebP always make a PNG smaller?
No. Simple optimized PNG graphics can already be very efficient, while photographic PNGs often offer more room for reduction.
Will the transparent background remain transparent?
Usually yes when WebP export is supported, but always inspect the finished file because browser encoders and edge content differ.
Is conversion private?
The selected image content is decoded and encoded in your browser. It is not sent to ImagesCompressor servers.
